Northern California Cideries
The California craft cider scene is rich. With over 80 California cideries there is a myriad of cider options for every kind of cider drinker. Dry, sweet, light, heavy, fermented with natural yeasts, barrel-aged, fruit infused, hoppy, probiotic…. you name it and it’s being done in California!
However…! Most small cideries and cider brewers don’t have tasting rooms or a place where you can buy their ciders from them directly. And, when you search ‘cidery near me’ on Google you don’t get the most helpful results.
So, I’ve put a list together of all of the California cideries that you can visit and buy cider from directly (and in most cases also taste on-site). Whether you are searching for a Sonoma County cidery, or cideries in Northern, Central or Southern California I’ve got you covered!
**Updated November, 2021**
Chico, Humboldt, Tahoe, and the Sierra Nevadas

This is one of my favorite California cideries! You can enjoy Humboldt Cider Company’s amazing dry ciders in their downtown Eureka taproom or cider garden in Eureka. Open hours differ by location with the cider garden open only Fri-Sun and the taproom open 7 days a week (from 4-8 pm).
Pick up cider to-go or fill your growler at the taproom between 4-8 pm or their cider garden between 3-7 pm.
**Humboldt Cider Co. can’t currently ship their ciders direct-to-consumers across the U.S. but are hoping to be able to by early 2022.

Hidden Star Orchards and Cidery
In August of 2019, Wendy and Johann Holm of Hidden Star Orchards and Cider purchased a 10-acre apple orchard in Camino, CA that included a bakery and a “gift” barn and is part of the Apple Hill association. In 2020 they turned the gift barn into a Cider Barn with 16 varieties on tap. They kept the bakery (run by local favorite Shorty’s Doughnuts who bakes up sugar-dusted delights that are difficult to say no to), and also offer a daily lunch menu. Johann (owner) is normally at the taproom daily selling cider and interacting with customers.
You can find them as Hidden Star Camino – Apple Hill #23. Along with hard cider flights Hidden Star also sells hard cider in bottles and growlers to take home. The tasting barn also features plenty of outdoor seating for those who’d like to sit and enjoy their cider tasting with lunch.
**Hours of operation are: Dec 1st – Jul 31st, Friday/Saturday/Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm. Aug 1st – Aug 31st, Wednesday through Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm. Sep 1st – Nov 30th, Daily, 9 am to 6 pm. No reservations required

Ace Cider Taproom/Pub (Sebastopol)
This classic local Sonoma County cidery has a tasting room and pub out in West Sonoma County that is open to visitors on Fridays from 1-5 pm. CORONAVIRUS UPDATE: Offering pickups Fridays from 1-pm. Follow their Facebook page for updates. The best way to buy Ace ciders in most cases (unless you’re a Sebastapol local), is to buy them at a retail location (supermarkets, wine shops, etc.) as they are widely distributed. To check and see where you can get Ace ciders near you, use this search tool.

Golden State Cider Co.
Formerly Devoto Orchards, Golden State Cider Co. transitioned their ciders completely to their new brand ‘Golden State Cider’ in 2017 (previously they’d had two different lines of cider under the two different labels) and began offering all of their ciders in cans (versus bottles). Golden State Cider Co. opened up their (long awaited) taproom, in The Barlow complex in Sebastopol, in late 2019.
They offer all of their core ciders plus a good selection of special Sonoma County apples only ciders on tap (the selection rotates seasonally and based on supply) at the taproom 11am to 10pm seven days a week. Customers are invited to grab food from one of the neighboring Barlow purveyors and eat it at one of Golden State Cider’s patio tables while enjoying their Golden State cider.
** You can purchase Golden State ciders in person at their Barlow taproom or online via their online store. Please note that some items are only available to be shipped within California. The business has also recently launched a new Cider Club. See the Club details here.

Gowan’s Heirloom Cider
Enjoy cider in its purest form, made where the apples grow, while you relax in the shade of hundred-year-old apple trees. Book a Cider Tasting in the Orchard experience at Gowan’s heirloom cider in the Anderson Valley. Gowan crafts world-class ciders with organic heirloom apples sourced exclusively from their heritage apple orchards.
Established in 1876, Gowan’s family farm spans six generations over 144 years, though they’ve only been making ciders commercially for a decade. They started offering orchard cider-tasting experiences in early 2021. These guys are among my top three favorite cideries in California and I always stop by their orchards or grab some bottles of their cider when I pass through the Anderson Valley!

Horse and Plow (Sonoma County)
You can visit these guys in their wine and cider tasting barn in Sebastapol seven days a week between 11 am and 5 pm. This organic winery, cidery, and farm serves up elegant blended ciders (and wines) for tasting, by the glass or by the bottle. Visit on the first Friday of the month and enjoy live music, food, wine, and craft cider.
These guys make some of my all-time favorite farmstead ciders.

Old World Winery/Trowbridge Cellars (Santa Rosa)
Old World Winery is an organic winery making organically grown and naturally made wines as well as a fantastic natural cider (under the Trowbridge Cellars label). Owner Darek Trowbridge is often on-site pressing, crushing, bottling, or doing one of the million things a boutique winery owner and winemaker does. You can visit Trowbridge Cellars and taste their cider (during normal winery business hours), as part of the regular wine tasting in their tasting room or pick up a bottle for purchase.

Philo Apple Farm (Mendocino)
You can buy bottles of Philo Apple Farm’s craft cider on-site at their farmstand in Philo 9-6 pm. They don’t have a cider tasting option (they’ve literally got a farmstand out in front of their farm, with some produce, bottles of cider, jams, etc. that works on the honor system) but they make delicious, farm fresh ciders. My favorite is their Wickson apple cider here.
If you run into one of the owners while you are there visiting their farmstand, ask them to tell you about the history of the Wickson apple in the Anderson Valley 🙂
Address: 18501 Philo Greenwood Rd, Philo, CA
Tilted Shed Cider (Sonoma County)
Tilted Shed cidery is open on Saturdays from 12-5pm at their taproom in Windsor’s Artisan Alley (where you’ll also find wineries, a distillery, and a brewery…).
Tilted Shed is a cider-geek favorite and a phenomenal cider tasting stop in Sonoma County. The cidery offers indoor seating, outdoor seating, and cider to-go. The tasting fee is $10/person (waived with the purchase of two bottles). These guys make so many great ciders, and they’re always coming up with something new. One of my all-time favorite Tilted Shed dry ciders is their Wickson (bone dry Champagne-like cider).
** Tilted Shed ships their ciders to 38 states.
