Pazo De Señorans is a family owned wine estate in the Pontevedra region of Galicia. The estate has been a winery since 1989 since Marisol Bueno and Javier Mareque bought the property and began their wine-making business.
The business and estate are now run by Marisol and Javier’s four children: Marisol, Vicki, Javier and Santiago. I toured the Estate with Marisol, the one who is most involved in the viticultural endeavors of their Estate, when I was in Rias Baixas.
The History of the Estate
The first thing most visitors ask when they visit Pazo De Señorans is where the name came from. Most people assume the name of the Estate must be the name of the family who originally owned and built it, but in the case of Pazo De Señorans no one really knows. The information hasn’t been found in the local records or any historical documents.
The word Pazo is the Galician name for the traditional manor houses of the past which were typically owned by nobility. But as far as Señorans, it does not really translate to anything in Spanish or Galician, it is simply a name.
Wines, Vineyards and Winemaking
Pazo De Señorans work with and buy fruit from many small local vineyard owners to produce their range of Albariño wines and have long standing relationships with these growers, purchasing from them consistenly year to year. Harvest can be a hectic time-with the scheduling of arrival of fruit from so many different farms and many vineyards’ fruits ripening around the same time. When I was at the vineyard tasting with Marisol, she joked that harvest is a time for tears-of both of frustration and joy (when it’s over!) for the person who is in charge of coordinating with all of the farmers/vineyards (her sister).
The Pazo produces a line of fantastic Albariños and two Orujos (a spirit distilled from grape pomace and then infused with herbs that is similar to grappa in Italy, but that is traditional in Galicia) .
