Bodega Algueira (Adega Algueira in Galician) is located in the Lugo Province, near the Sil Canyon in the Ribeira Sacra region of Northern Spain.
Though the winery was only founded in 1996, it was built in the traditional style of much older Galician wineries and structures so visitors get the feeling, that they are at a winery that has existed for much longer.
The winery owns a little over 40 acres of vineyards, and grow godello, mencía, albariño, treixadura, merenzao, brancellao, caiño, souson, and garnacha. Though Alguiera isn’t a huge winery, they make a handful of different brands/labels (which is unusual), but at the winery you’ll generally only see their Algueira, Brandan, and Pizarra label wines.
The winery created the different labels to facilitate the different kinds of business they do (restaurant, retail, on-site at the winery, etc.), but it’s honestly a bit confusing. All you need to know, is that their wines are good and you will rarely see them at home in the U.S. (despite Algueira being one of the best known wineries in this region), because of their limited production size and global renown.
Visiting the Winery
Like almost all wineries in the Ribeira Sacra, region, Bodega Algueira only accepts visitors by appointment.
I would suggest scheduling a wine tasting with Algueira at their bodega and then staying for lunch afterwards at the winery’s very nice restaurant, O Castelo, which is located just next door.
My favorite wines at Algueira have always been their Brandan godello (bright and fresh with minerality and tension) and Pizarra mencía, which is an absolutely stunning example of what mencía can be.
